If I Only Had a Bigger Brain…

kirsti @ 9:23 am

We have been home almost a week now and Amiya continues to amaze me. Mr. Fussypants was the nickname I used most often before his surgery but now his dispostion calls for Mr Smiley most of the time. Night time is still a difficult time as Mr. Smiley would prefer to be held whlie he snoozes but I think things will improve as his stitches become less uncomfortable and he can once again curl up on his side. We’re home!

kallol @ 7:15 am

We left the hospital late yesterday morning and spent the rest of the day reintroducing Amiya to his toys.  He was delighted to be home, although not too delighted to have to sleep by himself.  Kirsti ended up spending most of the night holding him while he slept.  More pictures and details to come later today.

Amiya’s First Girlfriend

kallol @ 9:17 pm

If we’ve been getting our son back in drips and drabs over the past couple of days, today a torrent of Amiya came rushing through our hospital room, drenching everything with spakly glitter and a scattering of oaty o’s on the floor.  (more…)

Another Amiya update.

kallol @ 9:32 pm

Little by little, our champion returns from the depths of a morphine fuelled sleep having vanquished countless demons in his imagined world.  In our world, he has been setting an example in endurance and strength for Kirsti and me.  Today is supposed to have the worst of the swelling following the surgery and Amiya certainly looks the part.  But looks can be decieving.  With each day and sometimes with each hour we notice more of our son coming back to us; whether it’s attacking things with his middle finger of doom or his cries signalling annoyance instead of extreme discomfort.  More details including today’s highlights follow the jump. Surgery gallery up.

kallol @ 9:31 pm

Despite being severely computer crippled here at the hospital, I’ve managed to throw up an album in the pictures section. You’ll see lots of tubes and one unhappy guy.

What a difference a day makes.

kirsti @ 11:59 am

Amiya made it through his surgery sucessfully and has a brand new extra-large forehead. I might be tempted to post messages on it for a while but he should grow into it in the next few years. His eyes were swollen shut when he came out of surgery and it took some time to adjust to his new face. I spent Thursday night in the ICU with him and that was by far the hardest experience. He was heavily sedated for the most part but would wake up at times and cry in a way that was excuciating to hear. Mainly because I didn’t know how he felt or how to comfort him. I sang to him and held his hand and we made it to the morning and were transferred out of the ICU.

In our new room, family was able to gather around Amiya’s bed and we had a few visitors. Amiya got a beautiful basket of books and toys from his PEPS buddies and I can’t wait until he can open his eyes and play with them.

Amiya was pretty comfortable last night so Kallol and I were able to get some sleep and I feel like a new person. The doctors removed a few more of his tubes today and I was able to comfortably hold him. He seems very comfortable in our arms and is mainly sleeping. He is having some problems with nausea still and we are working on getting some milk into him. The swelling will continue to get worse today and tomorrow but we may be able to go home on Monday if the swelling goes down and Amiya can open his eyes.

We are on the road to home.

Waiting at Children’s Hospital

kirsti @ 11:01 am

Amiya woke up at five and was miffed to find the milk bar was closed but he was in good spirits at the hospital and attempted to destroy a plant in the waiting room. He entertained his parents by chewing on his cute little hospital gown and repeatedly kicking off his hospital socks. He was calm and enjoying his pacifier when they took him to the OR at 8:00.

Our posse of eight has taken over the family resource center. Having family is a wonderful thing. My dad is working and taking lots of cell phone calls. My stepmom Linda and sister-in-law Mithu are reading our current book club selection: A Question of Choice, which I must admit I have not started. My mom is crocheting a hat that appears to be big enough for our entire family to wear simultaneously. My stepdad Steve is reading his latest spy novel that was published in 1972. My grandmother is working on a cross stitch and helping my mom read her crochet pattern. Four eyes are apparently not better than two in this case. Kallol is recovering from a cold and almost finished with a novel he started two days ago.

And me… I’m doing pretty well and can’t wait to see my sweet son.
